A massive study of 3.9 million U.S. troops who served during the first six years after 9/11 shows no link between being deployed in or near a war zone and a high risk of suicide.
Authors acknowledged, however, that further research is necessary to understand whether exposure to combat or the occurrence of mental illness among troops is tied to high rates of suicide.
