Study finds rising rates of non-martial births in cohabiting women

According to a report released on Wednesday by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), births to unmarried couples rose from 41 per cent in 2002 to 58 percent during the period 2006-2010. The new report also shows that half of those non-marital births within cohabiting relationships were planned.

“What’s happened is the percent of non-marital births within cohabiting unions has been increasing, but now it’s increased to the point where the majority of non-marital births are to women that are cohabiting,” says Sally Curtin, the report’s co-author.
