Study Finds a Cure of Hepatitis-C in HIV Patients

According to The Journal of the American Medical Association in a recent clinical trial a multicenter team of researchers reported that a combination drug therapy cures chronic hepatitis C in the majority of patients who are infected with both HIV and hepatitis C. This news comes as a relief for a number of people worldwide as HIV is already a brutal virus and combined with hepatitis C, it forms a lethal combination as hepatitis C is now a leading cause of death among HIV co-infected patients.

“The likelihood that a patient with chronic, long-standing hepatitis C infection would have spontaneous cure is near zero, so if these patients had not been treated, none would have been cured,” says Dr. Mark Sulkowski, professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
