Strawberries are in the season's sweet spot

The problem is that people love strawberries. Are obsessed with them, even. So the fine people who make it their business to grow and harvest and sell strawberries started taking these heart-shaped fruits and figuring out ways to extend their growing season through careful breeding of new varieties and improved growing methods.

Yet truly seasonal, locally grown strawberries still have the edge. Like tomatoes, fully ripe strawberries are fragile creatures that don't fare well when driven too far or held too long.
