The last lines of dialogue in “Foxcatcher” are “USA! USA!” A wrestler stares longingly at a portrait of George Washington. There’s a vintage American flag over a desk, talk about American values and a visit to Valley Forge. It’s almost as if director Bennett Miller is telling you something, and that something is, “I want to win awards.”

It’s too bad the film — based on a true story — embarrasses itself with that fatuous scramble for sociopolitical significance, because as a character study “Foxcatcher” is mesmerizing, eerie and unpredictably weird.
