When CBS announced Stephen Colbert would graduate from Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” on cable to host one of the flagship late-night shows on a broadcast network, there were natural questions about how well that would work, especially because Mr. Colbert would leave his popular conservative blowhard persona behind.
But over the past few months, through viral videos and press appearances, Mr. Colbert steadily made the case for just being himself. The premiere episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” proved conclusively that Mr. Colbert, not his “Colbert Report” character, was the right choice.
