While the majority of ‘Smart’ gadgets and accessories on the market right now are designed to make life easier, some are designing products that could help millions live not only better lives, but longer lives. In this instance, Columbia University researchers have developed a compact machine which in conjunction with a Smartphone is able to detect and identify two of the world’s most widespread STDs in a matter of minutes.

By taking the smallest sample of blood from a pricked finger, the device is able to detect evidence of both HIV and syphilis much faster than the conventional modern testing process – results often requiring several days to process.
