State, local officials continue arguing over accepting Syrian refugees

As a debate raged among state and local officials over whether to welcome Syrian refugees to the United States, the mayor of Roanoke on Wednesday cited the wartime internment of Japanese Americans as a model for maintaining American security.

“President Franklin D. Roosevelt felt compelled to sequester Japanese foreign nationals after the bombing of Pearl Harbor” during World War II, said Mayor David A. Bowers (D), “and it appears that the threat of harm to America from ISIS now is just as real and serious as that from our enemies then.”
