Starving sea lion pups on California coast

The 2013 rescue effort was large enough to be declared an “unusual mortality event” by the National Marine Fisheries Service, and this year is worse. The pups are very emaciated and underweight.

It is suggested by some scientists that the pups leave their nursing grounds on the islands off Mexico when their mothers don’t return from their own feeding.
