The third film in the modernized Star Trek franchise has had some ups and downs. Early on, JJ Abrams opted to step away from the project to work on that other space franchise, but would remain on as a producer. After some time, it was revealed that Roberto Orci, who has worked on the scripts for the famed series, would give directing a try. However, he was quickly removed, with his script being scrapped. Fast & Furious direct Justin Lin was brought in to helm the film.

With the project in need of a new script, the studio looked to a rather surprising source to fill the job, their very own Scotty, Simon Pegg.
