Sport's connective power at heart of 'Galaxy Game'

Given how central sports has become, culturally and economically, to Western society, I'm surprised that more science-fiction and fantasy writers don't examine the games we play.

When they do, we get the enormous pleasure of Quidditch in the Harry Potter series, so popular it's been Muggle-fied for the quotidian world of non-wizards; and the sobering reflection of the war-training game that the title character masters in "Ender's Game."
