Spawar satellites soars into orbit

A Navy telecommunications satellite that will expand the ability of U.S. forces to communicate in remote and austere environments was carried into orbit Tuesday by an Atlas V rocket that lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Lockheed Martin developed the MUOS-3 satellite for the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (Spawar) in San Diego. Spawar -- one of the region's largest employers -- specializes in connecting warfighters electronically throughout the world.
