I’ve posted two opinion/commentary pieces in the past week or so about the Space Shuttle tied in (more or less) with the anniversaries of Apollo 1 (1967), Challenger (1986), and Columbia (2003). Having looked back over them and the many comments they generated, I decided to make it a “trilogy.”
In my view, we have for a long time faced two basic handicaps when it comes to spaceflight development. First, ignorance. Many people do not understand how space works. An example of this would be the questions I occasionally field regarding why we do not typically return robot explorers to Earth.
