The O’Neill family, from Columbia, has raised $1.2 million to fund a gene therapy trial for Sanfilippo syndrome, a rare and terminal degenerative disease. The family hopes to raise the remaining $600,000 of their goal on Sunday, their daughter Eliza’s fifth birthday.

“It is ambitious, but you have already made us believers in the impossible. You’ve made us believe in happier birthdays in her future,” wrote her father, Glenn O’Neill, in a letter to supporters of the campaign.
