Somali Midwifery School Helps Tackle Harsh Conditions for Women | UN Women

Somalia has one of the highest rates of maternal death, with one in 18 women dying from complications during pregnancy or childbirth. The Mogadishu Midwifery School sets out to change this by training over 1,200 midwives to assist in birth and neonatal care.

MOGADISHU, Somalia -- Somalia is one of the worst places in the world to be a woman, especially a pregnant woman. According to recent statistics, one in 18 Somali women die from complications of pregnancy or childbirth -- one of the highest lifetime risks of maternal death in the world.
