Emad al-Masaadi, 41, and his son Hamudeh, 9, from Damascus, Syria, now live in Friedrichshafen, Germany, where they are seeking asylum. Last year, the two traveled from Libya to Italy on a smuggler's boat that nearly sank with 400 people on board.
