Will Smith gets back in Focus (review)

It was not that long ago that Will Smith’s films were as automatic as a Rolex. Putting his name above the marquee was a guarantee of a $100 million domestic gross, an additional $200 million internationally, and a sequel or three. But even the biggest movie star in the world is prone to the occasional flop. But after the debacle that was After Earth, it is heartening to see Smith regroup and return to his strengths in the eminently enjoyable drama Focus.

Smith stars as Nicky Spurgeon, a lifelong con artist who crosses paths with Jess Barrett (Margot Robbie), a novice con artist who is working her own con. After watching her in action, Nicky decides to take Jess under his wing, teaching her the various tricks and maneuvers that make up a conman’s ars...
