SMAP satellite to improve Drought Monitoring around World

On Thursday, NASA scientists announced that it will launch a new satellite, Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), to have the best maps of soil moisture levels across the world.

Experts said soil moisture level is one of the main factors in estimating drought severity. It also influences local weather, adds to problems like flooding and also plays part on how plants store and release carbon.
