★★★ The Homesman A spinster pioneer (Hilary Swank) and a broken-down claim jumper (Tommy Lee Jones) journey east to bring three madwomen back to civilization. Directed by Jones, this odd, ungainly western is harsh in its details, wayward in the telling, yet increasingly powerful as it rolls along. A genuinely strange and haunting movie.
