Sesame Street’s Big Bird became an unexpected campaign issue for Mitt Romney after the first presidential debate in October 2012. Though Romney expressed his adoration of the giant yellow muppet, he made cutting funding for public access programming an issue on the campaign.
The public response kicked around in the national media for days, detracting from important campaign issues and giving voters another reason to dislike Mitt Romney. In reality, government funding of PBS makes up only 12% of their annual budget.
