Shigellosis: Travelers Are Bringing a Superbug into the United States

Some international travelers are bringing back and spreading a bacteria that’s resistant to the drugs used to treat it, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Thursday in an investigation published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The bug, called shigella sonnei, causes an estimated 500,000 cases of diarrhea in the U.S. each year, and the CDC reports that between May 2014 and February 2015, a drug-resistant strain infected 243 people in 32 states and Puerto Rico.
