September Sets Records as Global Warming Claims Another Month

September was the warmest such month on record for the planet, according to preliminary data from NASA as well as independent analysis from the Japan Meteorological Agency released Tuesday. This extends the string of warmest months to six in a row, and, if confirmed in coming days by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), keeps the world on course to have its warmest year on record this year.

Much of this warmth has been powered by record warm ocean waters, in addition to warm land areas, and it is in line with expectations based on the interaction between manmade global warming and natural climate variability.
