Selma Director Ava DuVernay Says the Oscars Are “Just a Room in L.A.”

Between Oscar snub uproar and historical inaccuracy accusations, Ava Duvernay’s 2014 film Selma was mired in controversy. But that didn’t stop the director from having what she called “the most awesome fucking year.” During a keynote speech Saturday at the SXSW film festival she explained how she was able, to steal a phrase from Disney, to let it go.

After chasing box office dollars, glowing accolades, and awards show recognition for the first time in her directing career, DuVernay says this past year has changed her outlook. The inspirational message she had for festival-goers? “If if your dream is only about you, it’s too small.” DuVernay said...
