Sea Depth on Saturn’s Moon Titan Measured by NASA Probe Cassini

Titan, Saturn’s massive moon of which a feature is Kraken Mare, the largest hydrocarbon sea on the moon, is thought to be 115 feet deep or maybe more, according to a new study. NASA’s probe, Cassini, which has been orbiting Saturn and taking radar measurements of a 25 mile stretch of the eastern shore of the sea, has recorded depths between 66 and 115 feet, say researchers.

Cassini has only explored a very small part of Kraken Mare – a region close to the mouth of a river valley – and perhaps didn’t get as far as the deepest parts of the sea. As an example, Cassini travelled along a 125 mile route along Kraken Mare but did not record any data from that stage.
