Scientists Are Using a New Species of Snail to Honor Marriage Equality

The snails in question, previously mistaken for the closely related and well established Taiwanese land species Aegista subchinensis, were discovered to have several key differences when they were found on the eastern side of Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range in 2003. After a long process of careful study, detailed this month in the scientific journal ZooKeys, researchers from the National Taiwan Normal University and the Biodiversity Research Center of Academia Sinica have concluded that the species is in fact a distinct one, worthy of its own name.

Those differences included that the newly classified distinct species has a larger shell and flatter shell shape than its closely related cousin.
