Scientists use genetically-engineered polio-virus to cure brain cancer, possibly others too

Scientists at Duke University have re-engineered polio virus and adapted it to curing brain cancer, with hopes that it could further be modified to cure other types of cancers. Polio used to be an epidemic in the US and parts of the Western Hemisphere in the early 40s and 50s, but following an aggressive vaccination campaign, polio is now history – but scientists continue to research into modifying its virus for possible application to other diseases.

Targeting cancer cells with genetically engineered viruses is not really new, and it has proved effective at managing tumors in clinical tests, but they still remain to be approved by the FDA for further applicability.
