It has long been found that Mars has thousands of glaciers buried beneath its dusty surface, specifically on its mid-southern and mid-northern hemispheres. However, the extent of the glaciers remained unknown until recently, a group of scientists discovered that these glaciers contain enough frozen water that can cover the planet with a 1.1 meter thick layer of ice.

By using satellites orbiting Mars, researchers were able to capture images that reveal the shape of the glaciers. However, the composition of these glaciers, whether it is mud, carbon dioxide, or water remained as a challenge to many scientists.
