The scientific community has created what has been dubbed as the most comprehensive insect family tree ever devised. An international research team on Thursday has unveiled a detailed family tree using genetic data to work backwards and retrace the insect origins back to half a billion years ago and elucidate the relationships among the major insect groups.

As a part of the study the team analyzed 1,478 genes from 144 species covering all the major insect groups to answer the old question about the evolution and diversification of one of the biggest and the most diverse animal group. The study has been published in the journal Science.
