Scientists discover secrets into how chameleons change their skin colors

Researchers from the University of Geneva in Switzerland have published a report in the journal Nature Communications which gives insight into why and how the chameleon manages the tricks of switching its skin colors to match any environment and circumstance.

The scientists now find that rather than rely largely on manipulating skin pigments to change its colors, the reptile activates photonic nanocrystals in its skin to manipulate light and color when threaten or excited in any way – thereby picking the color of its environment or that of its predators.
