The first underground methane seep was discovered about 30 years ago and since then scientists have been analysing and measuring how microbes that are part of seafloor sediments process greenhouse gas methane, to give them a better understanding of how the world works.

The microbes form what can be described as a methane “sink” which stops a lot of methane from reaching the atmosphere, lowering the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
