Scientists detect radioactive samples from Japan's Fukushima off the coast of California

A group of scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute on Monday reported that they have detected traces of radiation from Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster about 100 miles off the coast of Northern California.

The scientists found the faint radioactive samples in ocean waters while monitoring radiation levels across the Pacific Ocean. The samples were sent for analysis to Ken Buesseler’s lab at Woods Hole, said Mr. Buesseler, an oceanographer who studies marine radioactivity at Woods Hole.
