Martin Schulz was re-elected president of the European Parliament, filling another of Europe’s top jobs as governments and mainstream parties try to counter a surge by protest groups.

Schulz, a Socialist from Germany, will head the European Union assembly for a further 2 1/2 years under a deal with Christian Democrats to split the job between both factions. A yet-to-be-chosen Christian Democrat is slated to occupy the post between January 2017 and mid-2019.
