Researchers at the Salk Institute have used specialized molecules to get rid of mitochondrial DNA that has mutated. This study could prove to be immensely important, as thousands of women around the world have mitochondrial disease; and for these women it could be extremely difficult—even dangerous—to have a baby.
Mitochondrial disease affects, of course, mitochondria, which is the powerhouse of the body. A mother with this condition can pass this condition on to the child. This, then, presents several other problems in quickly growing babies who need their energy.
