Intense fighting between Iraqi forces and Islamic State militants has resulted in the tomb of former president Saddam Hussein being destroyed, according to news reports.

The Associated Press reports the tomb was leveled Sunday during fighting to the north and south of Tikrit, which is near Hussein's birthplace, the village of al-Awja. All that remains of Hussein's once-lavish tomb are the support columns that held up the roof, the AP reports.
