Lester Holt becomes the permanent anchor of 'Nightly News,' while executives have carved out a reporting role for Williams at MSNBC.
Brian Williams will remain at the news division of NBCUniversal, but he will not resume his anchor duties of NBC's Nightly News when his six-month, unpaid suspension ends in August. The announcement, making an expected deal official, came Thursday afternoon from NBC News chairman Andy Lack and NBCUn...

Take a tour with me and see what's going on in the rest of Detroit, the good and the bad motorcityworkshops.com

There are plenty of other great areas in Detroit, and this article mentioned quite a few including Baker's Keyboard Lounge, Belle Isle, and Indian Village. Others that weren't mentioned aren't necessarily the places that tourists are visiting. If you are anxious to visit other areas of Detroit that are safe, I can think of a long list of places. However if your critera is that there be no blight anywhere within eyesight, I'd suggest you stay home. Blight is an inescapable part of a city with 130 square miles and less than 700,000 inhabitants.

Great article! Shows the good things happening in Detroit that we see and feel every week when we eat in the restaurants, visit our museums, walk in our parks, and take in cultural and sports events. So sad to see people judge today's city based on 20 year old input!

There's a White Castle at the corner of Livernois & Warren that is worth checking out, too. Seriously, having lived in Ann Arbor for 2 years, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Detroit, and have many fond memories of attending ball games at old Tiger Stadium in the '70s and '80s, and hanging out with friends who helped revitalize the Boston-Edison District, until it, too, was preyed upon beyond recovery. Things are simply not going to get better there until the basic mindset of the residents changes from one of crime, dependency and entitlements to respect for law, independence and hard work. Just what is so difficult to understand about that?

The city of Detroit is about 140 square miles. Almost all attractions in this article are within a half mile either way of Woodward Avenue. An area of approx. 10 square miles. And this area is about 50 percent terrible. The rest of the 130 square miles is sad to terrifying. People who don't drive through the city really have no idea of the extent of blight. I suppose Pollyanna Puff pieces like this are fine and there is a place for optimism for the far future. But there are 100,000 structures to tear down and they do about 5000 in a good year.

Up until recently I had always favored the west coast and Northern parts of Michigan but the resurgence of Detroit is very real and has created a unique atmosphere. Keep in mind that the city fell very hard and will likely never be what it was but it can be reinvented and is certainly on the upswing.

Where do you go after the black muggers leave you for dead? Last time I was in Detroit there were rats running across the street in front of city hall. Why would anyone in their right mind visit Detroit?

I live in the DET suburbs, and I applaud the WSJ for highlighting the brighter nuances of the area. Just don't patronize a gas station in the city limits after dusk, or you will be reading about yourself in the paper the next day.

Your visit to Detroit is not complete unless you visit the world famous Ravin Lounge for the best blues in the state and the hospitality of Tommy Stephens and his lovely wife. Come hungry and thirsty. Tell em Jim and George sent you.

I lived in Toledo for about a year about 20 years ago. It was awful. So one weekend I drove into Detroit. Same thing, only on a bigger scale. I would hope it's gotten/getting better. But I don't see how it can be billed as a tourist destination.

Opening of some new restaurants and beer joints do not mark a reawakening of a battered city. But something is better than nothing!

I grew up in Dearborn, but am glad I got out when I did. It would be great to see a resurgence in Detroit, but I don't think they are there yet.

You forgot Henry Ford Museum, a stupendous historical museum with a superb car collection in the western suburb of Dearborn (Henry's home town). Dearborn is still the home of Ford Motor Company, my former employer.

I can't wait for next week's feature on Newark.
