Rosetta's Philae Explores Comet After Bumpy Landing

After Wednesday’s dramatic landing on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, the Rosetta mission’s small robotic lander Philae has started to explore its surroundings, returning the first ever photographs from a cometary surface. It appears, however, that a heavy dose of luck prevented the lander from crashing or even being lost in space.

The initial landing at “Agilkia” was far from simple and mission scientists took some time to interpret the data. A day later, a clearer picture is emerging.
