Rodents in New York City carry plague fleas

In a study that might make you cringe, researchers have found that rodents in New York City are hosting fleas that carry dangerous plague pathogens. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Medical Entomology.

Matthew Frye, an urban entomologist with Cornell University’s New York State Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program, and his colleagues collected more than 6,500 specimens of fleas, lice and mites from 133 rats in New York City.
