Ford became an international name -- and decidedly not in a good way -- after admitting in 2013 to smoking crack "while in a drunken stupor." The Toronto Star and Gawker both said they had viewed cellphone video of Ford smoking crack, but the owners of the video want to be compensated for handing it over. Amid that and other controversies, the city of Toronto stripped Ford of most of his powers for the remainder of his four-year term.

Amid it all, a defiant Ford promised to continue doing the job he was elected to do. He even registered in 2014 to run for reelection to a second term, before doctors found a tumor in his abdomen.
