'Ride Along' Success Matters Because It's Not Surprising

The best part of the $48 million four-day debut for Tim Story’s Ride Along isn’t how much money it made or even that it was the top grosser for the weekend. The best part isn’t that it officially announces that Kevin Hart is a comic movie star while reaffirming Ice Cube’s box office draw, or that the film has created a relatively cheap new franchise for Universal (a division of Comcast Comcast) by nearly doubling its $25m budget in its first four days. All of those things are worthwhile and to be celebrated. The most important aspect of Ride Along‘s breakout success is that everyone saw it coming.
