Reviews of ‘Botticelli to Braque’ and ‘Embodiments: Masterworks of African Figurative Sculpture’ at the de Young Museum

The de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, which is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its stunning Herzog & De Meuron building, currently houses two remarkable exhibitions. The more newsworthy of the two, imported from Scotland, was sampled at the Frick Museum in New York and will visit the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, from June 28 to Sept. 20. The other is a uniquely local loan (and part donation) of more than 100 small African sculptures.

The National Museums of Scotland now comprise three separate art museums, all in Edinburgh: The Scottish National Gallery, which officially opened in 1859, spun off the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in 1889 and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (for works after 1900) in 1960.
