Review - 'Jupiter Ascending' Is Glorious, Gorgeous Fun

Jupiter Ascending has finally arrived, and it’s pretty awesome, folks. The Wachowskis’ latest film is a visually stunning space opera that will remind you of Guardians of the Galaxy set in a sci-fi version of the Game of Thrones universe, with the tone and anime stylings of Ghost in the Shell. It’s also very much a modern Disney fairy tale filtered through comic books and sci-fantasy gaming, sort of Maleficent and Star Wars combined in superhero genre form. It has many inspirations, as do all films, but that doesn’t make it any less original and enjoyable. It’s homages and influences are worn lovingly on its sleeve, and bring into focus just how very cool and new its pursuit of those influences happens to be.

Is it enough these days to provide a great original summer blockbuster that happens to release in February without similar competition, and to provide hours of thrilling action, spectacular visual effects, and wit with a little dose of social commentary?
