Retirement: Finding a new career direction

For years Jennifer Roberts, 61, of Herndon, Va., sold and managed newspaper advertising. Then, in her mid-50s, she started doing event planning, book publishing and seminars. Now, she's writing and editing government proposals. She made the transitions to different occupations after being laid off.

Roberts is planting the seeds for her next endeavor in case she has to switch careers again.
