Researchers Unearth a Rare Trove of Ancient Fossils from Wyoming Cave Dig

A paleontologist said on Friday that hundreds of bones of prehistoric animals, like American cheetahs, have been unearthed by scientists excavating an ancient Wyoming sinkhole. Des Moines University paleontologist Julie Meachen led an international team of researchers for the two-week dig of an ancient Wyoming sinkhole.

The sinkhole is known to contain a rare trove of fossils of Ice Age mammals. The extensive excavation was kicked off late last month, leading the scientists to uncover nearly 200 large bones of animals like horses that existed from 12,000 to 23,000 years ago and roamed North America.
