Researchers say exploding head syndrome and sleep paralysis go together

Just to make this clear, exploding head syndrome is a distressing phenomenon where an individual gets up from sleep and experiences feelings of explosions inside his head, and sometimes appearing to hear very loud noises which no one else hears. Sleep paralysis on the other hand is an experience you have when you wake up from sleep and unable to move any parts of your body or speak, even while fully awake and conscious – this occurs mostly in the night.

Led by Brian Sharpless, Washington State University researchers found that almost one in five college students interviewed, or about 18%, have experienced exploding head syndrome and sleep paralysis a number of times.
