Researchers: Quantum control of molecules could lead to insanely fast computers

According to a report from Northwestern University, researchers using a single laser have successfully stopped complex molecular tumbling motion. By shining a single laser on a trapped molecule, the molecule instantly cools to the temperature of outer space, effectively stopping the molecule’s rotation. The research could ultimately lead to extremely fast computers.

“It’s counterintuitive that the molecule gets colder, not hotter when we shine intense laser light on it,” said Brian Odom, who led the research.
