Researchers predict disease outbreaks using Wikipedia

The outbreak of an infectious disease can be predicted by observing what sort of information people are searching on Wikipedia, according to researchers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Led by Sara Dell Valle, the researchers examined Wikipedia data such as searches for symptoms or diagnoses for a period of three years, and successfully created accurate forecasts of the spread of dengue in Brazil and influenza in Thailand, Japan, Poland and the United States.
