Researchers Find The Oldest Fur Seal Fossil Ending A 5 Million Year Evolutionary Gap

Researchers have discovered the fossil of the oldest known fur seals. The fossil dates back 15-17 million years old and could resolve a five-million-year gap in fur seal and sea lion evolutionary history.

Researches from the University of Otago in New Zealand have discovered the fossil of new genus and species of fur seal, called Eotaria crypta, the genus Eotaria meaning dawn sea lion. The species were tiny and their adults were slightly larger than sea otter.
