An international team of researchers has found that a supernova can produce a large amount of the material from which planets like Earth can form. The discovery was made using NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).

The findings have been published in the online issue of Science magazine. Ryan Lau of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, said their findings reveal that a specific cloud produced by a supernova explosion 10,000 years ago consists of enough dust to lead to formation of 7,000 Earths.
