Islamic State militants beheaded an 82-year-old antiquities scholar in the Syrian city of Palmyra and hung his body on a column in the historic site's main square, Maamoun Abdulkarim, Syria's antiquities chief, said on Tuesday.
Abdulkarim said the family of Khaled Asaad told him that the scholar was executed Tuesday. Reuters reported that Asaad had been detained and interrogated for over a month by the terrorist group.
