STRASBOURG — Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi beseeched the European Union yesterday to stop being “bored” and show more leadership, in a speech marking his country’s takeover of the bloc’s rotating presidency.

“If Europe today were to take a selfie, what would come out?” he asked in a speech at the European Parliament plenary in the French city of Strasbourg, referring to the popular trend of taking one’s own picture.
